Open For Change

Written by

Open For Change by Rae Stonehouse, Okanagan-based Author, Speaker, Speech/Presentations Coach, Power Networker & Toastmaster Extraordinaire.

Are you? Open for change that is.

For the past two years around the end of December I have released an article entitled “Have you created your New Year’s Revolution yet?”Have you created your New Year’s Revolution yet?”

The gist of the article was in challenging local business owners to factor in a social responsibility component to their business. We often hear of businesses that in the annual festive season i.e. Christmas & New Year’s have discussions about supporting a local family in need. In the article I challenge businesses to think about giving and providing support to worthy causes, throughout the year. It can be a win-win-win situation. The recipients benefit from funds/support that they can readily use. If there is a non-profit society involved, they benefit because they can support more of those that they are focused on helping. The giving businesses in turn benefit from the additional exposure and positive public relations that they will receive from their support.

A local business, Open For Change, under the leadership of Michael Lavigne is doing just that and taking it to the next level. Open For Change is a for-profit social enterprise that empowers people to make a united effort for sustainable change, in your community and world-wide!

I had the privilege of meeting with Michael last year for an in depth look at his business model while he was in the planning stage. It was the first time that I had ever signed a nondisclosure contract that I didn’t have a clue as to what I would even be disclosed to. From those early steps Michael has come a long way to making his dream become a reality. Along that journey he is gathering followers to share his vision.

Open For Change’s mission is to create a united community that empowers people to make sustainable change. Their values … to find ways to make change easier so more people can get involved and make a difference.

For a meager $5.00 membership investment you can help make a difference. They have a unique financial formula that allows all profits from their investment portfolio to be divided into three equal portions: ‘1/3 goes to social causes that help our people; 1/3 to social causes that help our planet & 1/3 is reinvested into Open For Change and becomes part of the next round of investment funds.’ Members play a key role in the direction of the group by having the opportunity to vote between three Social Cause Organizations to have their idea funded from their investments.

In their short existence they have had a couple very successful campaigns. Contribution Campaign #1 Beneficiary: BCSPA/Contribution $13,3025.25 and Contribution Campaign #2: Love Inn Beneficiaries: Inn from the Cold/Metro Community/Kelowna Boys & Girls Emergency Shelter/Contribution Amount $82,409.84.
