Man on Mountain TopWelcome to the second edition of my newsletter Onwords & Upwords, your gateway to the Wonderful World of Rae Stonehouse.

You might be wondering why I’m promoting myself as the Wonderful World of Rae Stonehouse. Well, even if you aren’t I’ll act as if you are so I’ll have something to write about!

Having worked in psychiatry and mental health for over forty years, I am curious about most things of the psychological nature.

When I hear people utter ‘welcome to the real world’ I realize that I am talking to someone who has a narrow world view.

There is no such thing as reality. My reality is different from yours and anyone else’s for that matter. We create our own reality. Our personal reality is like a story playing out in our mind. We may not be the hero of our story, but it is definitely scripted from our perspective or point of view.

For the first part of my life, I was cynical, pessimistic and my worldview was that the world was a very nasty, scary place, full of obstacles to cause me grief. Yes, the world was against me, or it certainly seemed at the time.

I often refer to being a graduate of the school of hard knocks. I kept repeating the same behaviours over and over again, expecting different results. They never worked out. I was knocked around quite a bit before I figured out how life worked.

Years later, working in mental health, I learned that approach to life was considered a layman’s term of insanity i.e. doing the exact same thing over and over, expecting different results. If you want to receive different results, you have to make changes in how and what you do. I know that now. I wish I knew it when I was younger.

There’s a quote that resonates with me. You’ve probably heard it before. It has been attributed to Henry Ford, American Industrialist… “if you think you can or you think you can’t … you’re right!”

What Mr. Ford seems to me to be saying is that you create your own reality. I’m sure you can think of examples of things that you couldn’t possibly do, even if your mind convinces you that you can, if you try hard enough. Believing that you can fly like a bird isn’t likely to happen no matter how hard or long that you think you can.

But then again, what if Orville and Wilbur Wright had those same thoughts? Perhaps someone else would have pioneered in manned flight, but we will never know if and when it would have happened, because it did happen. The Wright brother’s world view included flying through the air like the birds do.

Day-to-day social interaction includes a lot of meaningless sayings. For example: ‘How’s your day going? “How are you doing?” “How’s it going?”

Sometimes I wonder if the questioner would notice if I just grunted in response, instead of acknowledging them. If I’m in a surly mood, perhaps after working a night shift, my response could be “just wonderful!” The emphasis being on the word ‘wonderful’ and life being anything but wonderful.

Conversely, on days when I’m in a better mood and more appreciative of being able to create my own reality, I’m likely to respond with “Just wonderful! Everyday above ground is a good one!”

That may seem sardonic to some, but it isn’t meant to be. Consider the alternative. Death, assuming that you chose the burial in the ground route, or someone made it for you after your passing, is for a long time. A really long time!

Which takes me back to the main point of this story, why the wonderful world of Rae Stonehouse?

I’m a firm believer in the Law of Attraction. I have manifested a lot of things and opportunities. The one about two million dollars in uncirculated twenty dollar bills is a little slow in coming though. I remain hopeful!

The Law of Attraction includes giving thought and regular appreciation to the things and circumstances in your life that you are grateful for. I’m grateful for many things that include, family, friends, having an advanced education and a job that allows me to provide for my family’s welfare. The list goes on and on.

And that folks, is why I promote the Wonderful World of Rae Stonehouse. So how’s your day going …?
