What does it mean to build a professional network?

As in any question, understanding the context is the key to providing the answer. This question is short on context. Lucas Bazemore provides some excellent advice on building a professional network.

I’m going to respond from a slightly different angle. When someone starts a business or goes into business for the first time, one piece of advice that is often given is to build your professional network.

While there is certainly value in developing your network with like-minded professionals that can provide opportunities, there is likely more value in developing your own ‘Success Team.”

As a business owner, you will require the services of professionals. A lawyer, an accountant, a bookkeeper, a financial planner, an insurance broker and a business consultant come readily to mind. These are services that you will need to run your business. You could likely pick and choose who you work with each time out of the Yellow Pages, many do, but you would be depriving yourself of the advantages of long-term relationships.

As these professionals get to know you, what you have to offer and that you readily send them referrals, it can be a mutually beneficial relationship. That is a professional network in action.
