Rae Stonehouse DTM celebrating @ D21 Toastmasters Spring Conference Vernon 2008

How many people can honestly say that they spent part of their formative years in a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane?

Rae can! True, he was working as a staff in the Dietary Department and was able to go home every evening at the end of his shift. Fortunately, that experience hasn’t had a lasting effect on him.

Over the past 40+ years Rae has been working as a Registered Nurse, predominantly in the field of mental health/psychiatric nursing. This has provided Rae with an in-depth understanding of human behaviour & psychology, which comes in handy for his creative and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Rae Stonehouse, Okanagan-based Author, Speaker, Speech/Presentations Coach, Power Networker & Toastmaster Extraordinaire.

He has managed a community-based specialized residential facility offering life skills training to chronically mentally ill individuals and has also conducted a considerable amount of therapy and counselling during his career.

Rae Stonehouse DTM Speech & Presentations CoachAs the saying goes, "Rae's been there … done that!" Rae used to be crippled by fear of public speaking and would do anything to avoid it. Luckily for him a friend told him about Toastmasters. For the past 25 years Rae has been honing his communication skills, taking on increasingly challenging speaking opportunities. He has developed a passion for speaking and helping others to increase their self-confidence and speaking skills to do the same.

If you have the time, Toastmasters is the world's most economical provider of communication & leadership training. If you don't, then perhaps engaging a personal speech coach is the best investment for you. Toastmasters provides excellent socialization opportunities and a self-directed educational program. Some people require more support to get past their fears and to move on to skill developing. Perhaps that applies to you?

Power Networking for Shy People: How to Network Like a Pro by Rae A. Stonehouse.

Over 40% of North Americans describe themselves as being shy.

Would you?

  • Do your hands start sweating and your legs shake with the thought of having to not only attend a business networking session but actually talk to people?
  • Do you feel paralyzed by the fear of rejection when you are at a business networking event?
  • Would you rather have a root canal than attend a business networking event?
  • Would you rather send an e-mail to a business lead than meet them in person?

Well if any of these apply... you may be shy!

"Get over it!" That's what our extroverted friends would say. "Just do what we do!"

Life isn't that simple. We aren't all extroverts and it would probably be a noisy world if we were. Being shy isn't a personal defect.

You aren't the only one out there, even if it feels like it sometimes. The world is full of shy people and that doesn't prevent you from being an effective networker and reaping the benefits that networking can bring to your business.

The author knows what it is like to be shy. He knows how avoidance & denial can be a good friend. He knows how uncomfortable it can be to attend a networking event and not know a single person.
