Only a Fool

Written by

Only a Fool by Rae Stonehouse, Okanagan-based Author, Speaker, Speech/Presentations Coach, Power Networker & Toastmaster Extraordinaire.

A recent posting to a local Facebook page by Kenn Dixon, a local Law of Attraction (LOA) Practitioner, resonated with me. “Only a fool trips on what is behind him.”

As a believer in the LOA myself, my first reactions were “that is so true!” The past is gone and can’t be relived or regained. This can be a hard lesson for many people to learn. As a registered nurse working in the mental health field for over 30 years I have seen over and over again where people do just that. They spend their life looking in their rear view mirror. “Caution, objects in the rear view mirror may appear larger than they actually are!”

Ruminating about how you could have done something differently is not productive. We all make choices in our lives and our businesses. We have to live with them. Some, we can ask for a do over, others we can’t.

Our mind believes what we tell it. If we tell ourselves that we can’t change the past, well then … we can’t change the past. Time to move on to something more productive. It also allows us to change the future … minute by minute.

The Universe has a way of reminding us sometimes as to what is important in life. If you haven’t successfully dealt with an issue in your past, it will chase you until you deal with it.

For me it has been dealing with bullies throughout my life. For far too long I was very much a victim. My core personality attracted them into my life. Then with a great deal of self-confidence skill building I was able to conquer their control over me. That’s not to say they still don’t come into my life. They do and they still think that they have power over me. They don’t!

Bullying is hitting the news almost every day. From the Penticton Herald: Penticton Herald: Local man stands up to bullying after strange incident at restaurant.” Local contractor Warren Lee is being heralded as a hero today for standing up to bullying.”

“Police were called to Burger King in Penticton shortly before noon, today, to deal with a complaint of causing a disturbance. According to a police report, a 33-year-old male complained about his order and began shouting at staff. A senior male interjected asking the man "to stop yelling at the ladies" at which time he was threatened with violence. Eyewitnesses say Lee, a customer in the restaurant, pinned the man and held him on the ground until police arrived five minutes later. The man was handcuffed but later released without charges as the parties did not wish to pursue legal action. He is banned from the restaurant. The man was not known to police.”

The restaurant chose not to press charges. A similar case a few months back in Alberta had two young patrons at a Tim Hortons throw a live snake at the staff because they were upset with their service. In both of these cases, I’m left wondering about the state of mind of those employees involved in those cases. Being bullied at work isn’t in anyone’s job description. Even witnessing a bullying or aggressive situation can play havoc on one’s mental well-being.

Focusing on the subject of bullying in the workforce takes its toll on me as it raises memories better left buried. However, proactively I have developed a presentation based on years of studying the subject of workplace bullying: “Workplace Ogres Be Aware! Practical Tips & Techniques for Resolving Workplace Conflict” to raise awareness of the subject. Now that a solution is available, it’s time to find someone with the problem.

If you are a business owner or work for a business I would urge you to scrutinize your employee guidelines/policies & procedures to see if you have something in place to deal with bullying and workplace conflict. If not… why not?

Bullying from any source should not be part of the workplace.
